I'm getting back to this pattern. Whew, this one is taking a while. The holidays sidetracked me and then there were still a couple minor quirks to work through. This afternoon I solved the remaining tricky part.
When the pattern comes out this wristlet will have an inset zipper like the Inset Zip Clutch, but I wanted to show that you don't have to use a zipper at all. Maybe you don't have one handy, or you just aren't ready for zippers yet (p.s. they are not hard--but I know it takes some time to get comfortable with the idea when you are new to sewing). Whatever the reason, you can totally just skip the zip!
The sew in magnetic snaps from this post came the other day, so it was great timing to try them out.
First, let me say these snaps are fantastic! They are very easy to use and I like that the opening doesn't have any hardware showing. It looks so neat and tidy with the snaps hidden behind the fabric.
These snaps will suction themselves to the throat plate of the machine. The key is to sew around the square perimeter of the plastic snap casing. At first, I tried sewing in a circle around the magnet and it was a mess. By sewing along the edges of the plastic casing I didn't even notice the magnetism until it came time to pivot at the corners. Then I had to pull the magnet up away from the plate in order to move the fabric.
I used my zipper foot, since there wasn't much room between the snap and the edge of the plastic.
If you are interested in these snaps you can read about where I bought them here. There are other places to buy them, but I do recommend ordering the ones in the plastic so you don't have to make a casing for it yourself.
