The exterior fabric is a Chambray shirting fabric and the lining is pink ticking. I wanted a pink to match the stitching on the button, and this pink ticking was perfect. The extra weight and thickness of the ticking made the bag extra nice.
I added some ties to the top. This bag is a tote bag so it is open at the top. A magnetic snap can be added, but it takes away some room at the top of the bag, and with the wide strap a snap can pull in the top of the bag some.
So I opted for adding ties this time. Since the ties hang down the center front, the button was moved off to the side. Off-centered buttons can be a very sweet detail anyway, so it's perfect there on the side.
These ties are 15" long x 2" wide and then folded into 4ths (just like the strap in the pattern instructions).
One is centered on the front of the exterior bag shell, and one on back. They are basted in place before attaching the lining shell and exterior shells together (i.e. sometime after step #5 and before step #7 in the instructions).
They look cute tied up as a bow, but I got lazy and just made a loose knot. :0]
There is also an extra pattern piece for a slightly different pocket for this bag. If you are on the email list, I'm sending you the extra pocket piece. If you are not on the email list, go to the upper left corner and sign up. Forward me your confirmation message and I'll email you a copy of the extra pocket piece. My email is my first name @michellepatterns.com.
This pocket is the same basic shape, but just one piece, which simplifies things and makes the sewing go faster. The extra pocket would also be great to use as a large patch pocket on the inside of the bag.
Have a nice weekend!
